Dental plaque is an almost invisible film of bacteria that accumulates on our teeth and gums (especially in the spaces between the teeth and along the gum line). It is a sticky colorless deposit at first, but when it forms tartar, it is often brown or pale yellow. It is a biofilm that is made up of microorganisms such as streptococcus mutants and other bacteria.
Plaque is a sticky substance made from leftover food particles and salvia that mix in your mouth. If you don't brush properly after meals, it begins to form and build up on your teeth.
In the conditions and circumstances listed below, plaque is more easily formed and stubbornly retained.
The bacteria in plaque cause tooth decay and gum disease if they are not removed regularly through brushing and flossing. Regular visits to the Pediatric Dentist in West Palm Beach in a family friendly place are helpful in controlling plaque.
