Conscious sedation is a management technique that uses medications to assist the child to cope better with fear and anxiety and cooperate with dental treatment. This can help prevent injury to the child and promote a better environment for providing dental care.
Nitrous oxide is a very safe gas and is commonly known as happy gas or laughing gas. Giving nitrous oxide is a way to help reduce a child's pain and anxiety during dental treatment. Your child's dentist in my area will give the sedation with the use of a small nosepiece, which carries air (oxygen) mixed with the medication. Your child will be awake throughout the procedure.
Nitrous oxide's sedation effect is felt within minutes, and the effect wears off within minutes after the gas is stopped. The sedation effects may start to be felt immediately and can last from 2 – 3 minutes; some effects may last up to 30 – 40 minutes.
Sedation is safe when administered by a trained Pediatric Dentistry in West Palm Beach who follows the sedation guidelines of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.
