A gap or space between two teeth is called a diastema and is most frequent between the upper front teeth. However, gaps can occur between any two teeth. Diastema is extremely common and not harmful. The spacing can come from many different things:
Having baby teeth as a teen can cause gapping in the teeth due to them being so small and not feeling the adult space. A person can keep their baby teeth for a certain amount of time as long as they remain healthy. This mostly happens when the some of the teeth are still forming before birth. Children may have temporary gaps as their baby teeth fall out. Most of these spaces close as the permanent teeth reach their final positions.
If someone has a Large Labial Frenum which is the space in your mouth that connects your top lip to your gums. This is “flap” can grow down in between your two front teeth causing a gap. The bigger the flap the bigger the gap may grow.
Being too attached to a pacifier, bottle, or cup during the baby and infant stage. This is bad for the teeth and can cause decaying and form spacing between most of the front teeth.
You may also develop diastema if there is an overgrowth of the tissue that borders your kid’s gum line and the teeth. This overgrowth causes a separation between these teeth, resulting in a gap.
The space between teeth should be fixed by a child specialist dentist if the cause is harmful or the gap creates additional dental issues. Even though gaps or spacing in the teeth can be genetic it is best to ensure you are following the right steps of caring for your children’s teeth.
